Dedication set for Sullivan County fish and wildlife area

State and local officials will mark the opening of the Busseron Creek Fish & Wildlife Area in Sullivan County on Wednesday.
The nearly 4,000-acre property—comprised of forests, woodlands, marshes, swamps, lakes and grasslands—was recently declared permanently protected land through a collaboration of nonprofit and government partners.
The land was previously known as the Minnehaha Fish and Wildlife Area and was owned by a subsidiary of Peabody Energy.
A collaboration among the Conservation Law Center, The Conservation Fund, the U.S. Department of Defense, The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Walmart’s Acres for America program and the state of Indiana secured the entire parcel, which was valued at more than $12 million. The property was recently transferred from The Conservation Fund to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
A dedication ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Indiana Secretary of Energy and Natural Resources Suzanne Jaworowski and Indiana DNR Director Alan Morrison will be part of the event.
