Deaconess begins work on emergency and urgent care facility

Evansville-based Deaconess Health System broke ground Wednesday on its first-ever dual emergency and urgent care facility.
When complete, the three-story, $40 million facility will also include medical offices, imaging and an outpatient lab.
The facility, located at 5001 Health Way near the intersection of Lynch and North Green River roads, will total about 60,000 square feet.
The health system said in a news release that it will eliminate the need for patients to self diagnose before seeking medical care. Patients will be evaluated by an emergency physician who will determine whether care is needed at the urgent care or emergency room level.
Deaconess Medical Director of Emergency Services Dr. Matthew Gilbert said in a news release that the dual-model approach is a game-changer for patient care.
“As physicians, we see firsthand how confusion over where to seek care can lead to delays in treatment,” said Gilbert. “By combining ER and urgent care services, we’re simplifying access to the right care at the right time—improving outcomes and patient experience.”
The health system added that the facility will only bill patients for the level of care they receive, potentially lowering out-of-pocket costs and reducing wait times.
Construction is expected to be complete in 2026. The adjacent Deaconess Clinic Lynch will remain open during construction and continue to run as a primary care clinic.
