The Department of Child Services has named Erin Murphy director of communications. In her role, she will oversee and respond to DCS’ national and statewide media inquiries and promote the department’s key initiatives throughout the state.

Murphy has more than a decade of experience in media and public relations. She previously served as communications director for the city of Westfield, where she served as media relations advisor and spokeswoman. Murphy coordinated press conferences and ribbon cuttings, oversaw Mayor Cook’s State of the City addresses, created marketing campaigns, developed brand guidelines, managed multiple website redesigns and launched social media strategies that helped increase Westfield’s visibility on Facebook and Twitter. She also served as a reporter and anchor at WISH-TV in Indianapolis.

Murphy graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and is currently working to obtain her master’s degree in public relations from Ball State University. She has been a board and committee member at various organizations including Westfield’s Transit Education & Engagement, Mayor’s Yellow Tie Ball, Westfield’s Youth Assistance Program, Alzheimer’s Association and R.A.C.E.S. Rape Advocacy Counseling & Education Service. Murphy recently took a board position at Student Impact, an organization that offers kids a safe place to go after school. She also serves as a member of the Public Relations Society of America’s Hoosier chapter.
