The initiative, launched by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is being funded by a $2.2 million grant from Carnegie Corp. of New York.
The commission will examine the growing array of learning options available to high school graduates and adult learners. The group includes national leaders in business, education and government. The commission is being tasked with offering recommendations to ensure that higher education will respond effectively to demographic, technological and financial challenges that lie ahead.
As part of the effort, the commission has put together a group of economists and other experts to identify trends in how Americans are currently receiving post-secondary education. From there, the group will identify promise and problems in those trends and determine their long-term effects. Spencer Foundation President Michael McPherson and TIAA-CREF Chief Executive Officer Roger Ferguson will co-chair the commission.
