News Release

Dr. Jim Dalton has been named president and CEO of Damar Services. Dr. Dalton joined Damar in 2002 and most recently served as president and COO. A licensed child psychologist with more than 20 years of experience in child and adolescent behavioral health, he has served as a clinical consultant, evaluator, researcher and administrator. He replaces Greg Johnson, who resigned in September for personal and health reasons after serving as Damar’s chairman and CEO since 1980.

Damar serves children and adults challenged by developmental and behavioral disabilities, enabling them to live more successful lives. Through community-based and residential treatment, outpatient behavioral health, ABA Autism Services by Damar, Damar Freeway Academy, Damar Charter Academy, Damar Foster Care Services and more, Damar’s staff of more than 900 serves approximately 1,200 clients and families daily across Central Indiana and beyond.

“Like all mental healthcare organizations, Damar is facing greater financial, operational, and regulatory challenges than at any other time in our history,” said Gail H. Shiel, chair of the Damar Board of Directors. “We’re extremely confident in Dr. Dalton’s vision and abilities as we navigate the future together.”

Even before he joined Damar, Dr. Dalton made an impact on the developmental disabilities industry. A former director of Behavioral Health Services at Community Hospitals of Greater Indianapolis and COO of Lutheran Child and Family Services, Dr. Dalton also served as a special education consultant to Indianapolis Public Schools.

Dr. Dalton earned a B.A. from Anderson University and an M.A. and Doctor of Psychology degree from Spalding University, where he graduated first in his doctoral class in clinical psychology. Both his pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral residency programs were completed at the Ohio State University School of Medicine, where he also was an adjunct professor of pediatrics and clinical child psychology.

Dr. Dalton has been recognized often for his insightful and positive leadership in the mental healthcare industry – particularly in the field of clinical child psychology – and for innovative practices in child psychiatric residential care. He has published a number of scholarly articles that focus on behavioral health interventions for children and families with very intensive needs. He serves as a national consultant for the Building Bridges Initiative through SAMHSA and is currently co-authoring a textbook with other consultants across the country. He is cofounder of IN-AJSOP, Indiana's credentialing and certification program for professionals serving youth with sexually aggressive behaviors and serves as the Board Chair of this organization. Dr. Dalton is married to Jodi. They have 5 children.
