Cummins Unveils Major Investment in Women
In the midst of International Women’s Day, Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has detailed what it calls a "landmark" community initiative designed to boost the impact of women and girls on the world. Cummins Powers Women is a multi-million dollar effort that involves investment and partnerships with nonprofits in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia which focus on female empowerment. The company made the announcement Thursday in Indianapolis during its second Women’s Conference.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business Multimedia Journalist Mary-Rachel Redman, Cummins Foundation Chief Executive Officer Mary Titsworth Chandler said the initiative focuses on the workforce. "We hope for exponential change," she said, "meaning one or two wins, then 10 or 20, and then 100, and then a million girls brought into this great initiative. That’s what we’re hoping for."
In North America, Cummins will collaborate with Girls Inc. Partners throughout the world include:
- Rosa Fund in the United Kingdom
- Save the Children in Germany
- China Women’s Development Foundation in China
- Rise Up in Africa, Latin America and India
- Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education in Ghana
- CARE Australia in Cambodia
- Girls Academy in Australia
Chandler says Cummins was "rigorous in our evaluation" of partners. "We are pleased to partner with nonprofits around the world that have research-based programs, metrics in place and a really strong track record of success empowering women and girls" she added. The programs range from mentoring and teaching to financial empowerment and entrepreneurship to leadership development and advocacy. Cummins will also invest in leadership training and skills development for leaders of nonprofits.
