Crane Army Ammunition Activity sees command change

Crane Army Ammunition Activity is getting a new officer in charge as the large munitions base in Martin County continues efforts to modernize operations.
On Thursday, Crane Army welcomed Col. Aaron Cornett as the depot’s new leader. Cornett takes over for Col. Franyate Taylor, who is taking a command at Fort Knox, the U.S. Army announced in a press release.
“We are a critical juncture in our nation’s history,” Cornett said in the release. “There is a renewed emphasis on rebuilding and modernizing the industrial base and Crane is poised to play a prominent role in becoming more resilient and self-sustaining.”
Cornett’s appointment comes as Crane Army is undergoing significant changes. Earlier this month, Crane Army announced it has reduced its staff by about 300 personnel due to a mandate from the Trump administration.
The staff reduction comes amid a 15-year, $285 million modernization plan. That included the opening of a new railcar yard earlier this year that hopefully will improve efficiency and safety of ammunition transportation.
Established in 1977 at Naval Support Activity Crane, Crane Army Ammunition Activity produces and provides conventional munitions in support of U.S. Army and Joint Force readiness.
As for Cornett, he has held multiple commands at Fort Bragg and led the 53rd Transportation Battalion, per the army. He has also held multiple teaching positions including as an assistant professor of military Science at the University of Kansas and an instructor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
