Tax Increment Financing funds will help with infrastructure work in and around the planned Kitselman Pure Energy Park at the former Indiana Steel and Wire site.
The property is a federally-designated "Superfund site" and has undergone significant remediation. The project was detailed last week. In addition to the privately-funded KPEP, the full scope of the efforts include the $9 million Kitselman Trailhead designed to serve as a gateway, linking the city’s eastern corridor to the 62-mile Cardinal Greenway, downtown Muncie and a greater portion of the region.
KPEP Indiana LLC Chief Executive Officer Gary Dannar said during the announcement more than $25 million in commitments have been locked-in for the business park. Plans call for a city-owned shell building on the 18-acre property, as well as Dannar’s mobile power station manufacturing operation. Dannar announced plans in 2013 to relocate the business from South Carolina to Muncie and eventually employ around 290 in Delaware County.
Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler sees the project as a way to attract and retain businesses and young talent, calling the project a sign that the city "really gets it and understands what they need to do to redefine themselves."
