A small Carmel nonprofit says its product could “change the whole paradigm” for the world's food security. Sustainable Nutrition International's Nutra-Iso is made from rice bran, a byproduct that is typically thrown away or fed to cattle. SNI is working with Intermark Partners Strategic Management LLP, also based in Carmel, to convert rice bran into a nutrient-dense, edible product. The partners believe the technology could make 40 million tons of rice bran available each year to reduce chronic malnutrition in developing countries for about 10 cents per serving. Life Sciences Reporter Kylie Veleta discussed the product on Inside INdiana Business Television. The partners earned a patent for Nutra-Iso earlier this year, and the product has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The product comes as a near-tasteless powder that can be mixed with water or food. It showed promise during clinical trials in Guatemala, where infants went from being emaciated to fully nourished within three months of consuming Nutra-Iso daily.

Sustainable Nutrition International joined industry giant DuPont to win the 2013 Patents for Humanity award from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
