The Indianapolis Motor Speedway says a fan will design the trophy for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Organizers say trophy design contest entries will be judged on relevance to racing and creativity.

News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Arts Council of Indianapolis encourage fans to participate in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis Trophy Design Project, which will create the winner's trophy for the inaugural IndyCar Series road race on the IMS road course on Saturday, May 10, 2014.

Fans should visit www.ims.com/trophycontest to submit an entry and for rules and regulations. Entries must be submitted no later than Jan. 18, 2014.

“Everyone who enters this contest will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to provide the winning trophy design for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “We're proud to join with the Arts Council of Indianapolis for this project that will connect our fans with this new and exciting event, and we're all anxious to see the creative talents of our fans.”

The winning designer will be recognized at an unveiling ceremony in early February. The winner also will receive a replica of the new Grand Prix of Indianapolis trophy, two suite tickets to the inaugural race and a post-race photo with the winner of the 2014 Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

All entered trophy designs will be judged on relevance to racing, originality and creativity. The winning entry will be determined by a panel of judges, including members from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, IMS executives, and a driver and team owner from the IndyCar Series.

“The Arts Council of Indianapolis is pleased to participate in the creation of what will become another iconic trophy to honor motor racing's finest,” said Dave Lawrence, president and chief executive officer of the Arts Council of Indianapolis. “We are proud to support the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and celebrate the art of racing and the arts in Indianapolis.”

The new Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the reconfigured IMS road course will jump-start Month of May activities at IMS and build toward the 98th Indianapolis 500 later in the month. New spectator mounds and grandstands will be available in the infield section of the course to create exciting, fan-friendly vantage points.

Month of May activities will begin with IndyCar Series practice for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis Thursday, May 8 on the new-look, 14-turn, 2.439-mile IMS road course. Practice and qualifying are scheduled for Friday, May 9, with the race Saturday, May 10.

All series in the Mazda Road to Indy will compete during the event, placing a singular spotlight on all levels of North American open-wheel racing throughout May at the Racing Capital of the World.
