Nearly 1,000 students in northwest Indiana will Tuesday take part in the inaugural Construction & Skilled Trades Day event at the Lake County Fairgrounds. The event will feature demonstrations and information about career opportunities in union building and construction, as well as apprenticeships.
The event is being hosted by the Northwest Indiana Workforce Board and the Construction Advancement Foundation. It will be open to students from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and then open to the general public from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The organizers say 14 trade organizations will be on hand, some of which will have hands-on demonstrations for students. They include:
- Indiana Plan
- Carpenters and Millwrights
- Sheet Metal Workers
- Operating Engineers
- Technical engineers (surveyors)
The organizers say those interested in apprenticeships will be able to learn how they provide the skills needed to compete in the workforce. Attendees will also receive information on how to successfully apply for apprenticeships.
