The interactive history park says it welcomed 428,602 visitors last year, an increase of more than 37,000 compared to 2016. A record number of families — 8,267 — were annual members.
Officials also launched a 20-year master plan in 2017 to investigate potential development and programming on close to 1,000 undeveloped acres and 3.2 miles of riverfront property on the ground.
Chief Executive Officer Norman Burns says "while we will always have a heart for the past, we also have to have a head for the present and an eye to the future because we believe that understanding the past can help us navigate current pathways and forge new paths into the future. Through our planning so far, there have been big ideas for improving, expanding and creating new experiences across the entire property and push us toward our goal of becoming a year-round destination for all ages."
