She holds the distinction of being both the first woman and the first African American to serve as an associate justice on the Indiana Supreme Court. While Selby served on the court she authored more than 100 majority opinions receiving national recognition and was appointed to chair its Commission on Race and Gender Fairness. Prior to her appointment to the Court, she was director of health care policy for the state of Indiana. Selby received a bachelor of arts from Kalamazoo College and a juris doctorate from the University of Michigan School of Law.
