A half-dozen Hoosier communities have been awarded funding from a federal program designed to fight drug use among children. The $86 million Drug-Free Communities Support initiative provides grants to private, nonprofit and public organizations throughout the country.

The new grantees from Indiana are:

• LaPorte County Drug Free Partnership in Michigan City
• Geminus Corp./ Lake County Substance Abuse Council in Merrillville
• Shelby County Drug Free Coalition
• Greensburg Prevention Group
• Gary Neighborhood Services Inc./ Community Organizations for Families and Youth (COFFY)
