Collaboration Targets Electronics Fundamentals

A new partnership between the WestGate@Crane Technology Park and Vincennes University aims to skill-up potential workers in southwest central Indiana. Electronics Fundamentals Certificate program classes will begin January 8 at the Battery Innovation Center and will involve what officials describe as "a comprehensive introduction to all areas of electronics."
The BIC says the courses make up the core of the year-long Certificate of Graduation in Electronic Fundamentals and those who complete them could use the certification to enter the workforce or apply toward an associates degree. BIC Acting President Ben Wrightsman says "while the immediate goal of the program was to meet current industry demands, the broader goal was to attract other potential employers to the area. BrightVolt, a Florida-based company that recently expanded at the BIC, is a great example of one of those potential employers. Both BrightVolt and the BIC are currently recruiting for open positions, and intend to hire local talent. More specifically, we hope to hire additional students from the Electronics Technology program." Wrightsman adds the effort will help reduce the need to recruit talent outside the region.
The program is funded through an Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs workforce development grant. The courses through VU will involve AC/DC, digital circuits, and linear electronics training and include hands-on use of technology and techniques such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies and soldering.
