Co-Founder: ‘No Limit’ to Code School’s Potential Reach

South Bend Code School continues to grow and a co-founder of the high-tech training organization says she’s open to even more expansion. Alex Liggins says the new markets of Fort Wayne and Goshen share the same outlook of innovation and creativity that is the focus of South Bend Code School. The organization teaches the fundamentals of web development, design and entrepreneurship to elementary and high school students. Partnerships in the new communities include Start Fort Wayne, Downtown Goshen Inc. and the Goshen Chamber.

Liggins tells Inside INdiana Business program participants come from diverse backgrounds. She says more than 50 percent are underrepresented minorities and around half are girls or young women and "in tech, that is not the norm." Liggins believes there’s no limit to the school’s growth potential. She adds "I would love for those numbers to be even higher as we explore and work with even more students. We’re keeping the program as diverse as possible and exposing the opportunity to as many students as possible who may have not had that opportunity previously." Liggins says the program not only teaches kids basic skills of the industry, but South Bend Code School also helps with internship, job and college connections.

Another benefit, Liggins says, is instilling confidence and discovering interests that may have not presented themselves before. "We end up with students who go through the program and they see that they are able to now do these things that at one point seemed impossible and so then they’re suddenly willing to explore other opportunities out there," she says. "It breaks down the barriers a lot of times where now our students are willing to discover and try new things because they’ve mastered coding."
