City Hopes Baseball Movie Will be a Tourist Hit
A small southern Indiana community is hoping to turn a well-known movie into a tourism boon. Huntingburg is home of League Stadium, where the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own” was filmed. Mayor Denny Spinner says he hopes to replicate the success Iowa has had in marketing itself as the home of “Field of Dreams.” He believes the Dubois County community's historic downtown will also help it capitalize on “untapped potential” as a tourist destination. Spinner and Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann are among the guests on this weekend's special edition of Inside INdiana Business Television focusing on Huntingburg and Dubois County.
Other movies, including “Hard Rain” and the HBO film “Soul of the Game” have been filmed in Huntingburg as well.
The city is also home to the Huntingburg Museum, which features pictures, artifacts and documents illustrating the life and times of the city's residents. It also houses various war memorabilia, a 1901 tour car and items from “A League of Their Own.”
Huntingburg is one of six finalists for the 2014 Stellar Communities program. Two cities will receive the designation later this summer.
