Chamber Broadens INTERNnet Focus

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce has announced plans to expand its Indiana INTERNnet initiative with a pilot program aimed at high school students. Executive Director Janet Boston says the goal is to bring employers and school corporations together to "foster an even earlier pipeline of talent into the state’s workforce."

The Indiana Chamber Foundation and Indiana INTERNnet will partner with Greenwood High School and Owen Valley High School in Spencer for the pilot program. The chamber will hold Intern 101 sessions for the school districts and local employers this fall.

Boston says the expanded focus will give high school students more career exploration before heading to college and will also foster more middle skills job connections.

"From the employer’s perspective, there is a skills gap issue with not enough skilled workers," said Boston. "Some high school students don’t know the opportunities out there, especially for those not on the college track. They can make wiser decisions sooner."

Additionally, the organization has hired Kristan Pfeifer as an assistant director. Pfeifer previously served as assistant director for employer connections and internships at Ball State University.

“(Pfeifer) brings valuable assets to our organization, and her background in the for-profit space and focusing on employer connections matches our mission and will help us continue to expand the Indiana INTERNnet resources and service offerings," said Boston.
