Campaign to Renovate Former Armory Hits $3M Goal

Indianapolis Classical Schools has met the $3 million goal of a capital campaign to fund renovations at the former Heslar Naval Armory near downtown Indy. The parent of Herron High School says the milestone will allow it to complete the armory’s transformation into the new Riverside High School.

ICS says meeting the campaign goal means the project will be completed without any long-term debt. The organization will continue to raise funds for unmet needs at the facility, including bleachers for the gymnasium and annual operating costs.

Additional funding for the $10 million project is coming from a number of other sources, including Tax Increment Financing funds, as well as historic and new market tax credits. ICS says the project is on track for completion in June ahead of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Plans to open a second school at the armory were announced in 2015. The armory was constructed in 1938 and was decommissioned in 2015. The building sat vacant until 2017 when the renovations began.

Some of the improvements made through the renovations include increased accessibility and a reconfiguration of the interior walls to create enough classroom space. ICS says Riverside High School opened this year in a temporary location and will grow to serve 600 students in grades 9-12.
