South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has appointed Stephanie Steele corporation counsel. She has served as assistant city attorney representing the South Bend Police, Fire and Animal Control departments.

Steele graduated from the University of Michigan and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. She previously served as deputy prosecuting attorney for the St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit.

While with the city, Steele negotiated the first-ever four-year contract between the Fraternal Order of Police and the South Bend Police Department. She was involved in the restructuring of the SBPD and drafted the new police duty manual. Additionally, Steele worked to bring body cameras to the department.

She is an active member of the community and attends Olivet AME Church. Steele serves as a board member of the Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County and is on the Task Force for Homes for Hope of St. Joseph County. She is vice president of the Board of Governors for the St. Joseph County Bar Association.
