Barnett is currently a professor and associate provost at Elon University in North Carolina.
The Kentucky native has taught several courses at Elon since 2001, including Broadcast Journalism, Communication Research and Intellectual Property Law. Barnett says she’s looking forward to her new opportunity.
"I’m excited about the different disciplines that are in CCOM," Barnett said. "I think there are great opportunities for synergy across the areas and also continued honing of distinction within specific disciplines. CCOM faculty and staff are stellar and clearly focused on student learning and providing a meaningful student experience."
She replaces Jay Howard, who has been serving as acting dean of the College of Communication and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since July 2017. Barnett will assume her new duties on June 1, 2019.
