Burns Harbor Port Touts ‘Landmark’ Year

The port fell short of last year's all-time record volume.

The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor says it handled 2.8 million tons of cargo in 2017, up 8 percent over the previous year. The results contributed to what the port says is the highest four-year total in its history. Shipments were up 27 percent over the previous four-year period.

In addition to the bump in cargo, the Ports of Indiana touted the addition of California-based Metro Ports’ new bulk terminal, which was described as a "game-changer" for the northwest Indiana port. The Burns Harbor port also announced a nearly $20 million expansion, with nearly half of the cost being covered by a federal FASTLANE small project grant.

"We had a strong year in part because our world-class companies continue to drive new business through our port," said Port Director Ian Hirt. "Going forward, we plan to build on this success and make sure this port is well positioned for the future. The continued growth of general cargo shipments managed by our partners at Federal Marine Terminals, the addition of Metro Ports taking over our bulk cargo operations and our strong labor force are all critical elements in this port’s success." 

The major expansion project includes two new rail yards, a new shipping berth, a truck marshalling yard, a 1,200-foot dock expansion and a new bulk cargo terminal. Hirt says the expansion will allow companies currently located at the port to grow and also attract new business.
