Burns Harbor Outlines Targeted Projects

A small northwest Indiana town has detailed a list of priority projects aimed at meeting its long-term economic and community development goals. The Town of Burns Harbor Redevelopment Commission says the work includes connecting the town to the region-wide Marquette Greenway Trail system, redeveloping a site into a town center and creating a community center.
The first phase of the trail project has received a $2 million grant from the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission. Initial site work is already underway and construction on phase one could begin in 2020. Officials says they are also exploring funding options for an additional phase that would cost nearly $5 million.
Eric Hull, who serves a president of the six-member board, says "ultimately our mission is to develop a sense of place and pride for residents, visitors and businesses. We want to enhance our Town identity and gain recognition as a development partner and project collaborator within the region."
Other projects identified by the RDC include:
- Further program activation of Food Truck Square/community marketplace
- Wayfinding signage to highlight Town’s location and attractions
- Pedestrian-friendly improvements along S.R. 149
- Business incentive program to attract and retain companies and jobs
- Façade standards for new and existing businesses
