BAGI President Craig Jensen says there is "unrealized opportunity" for the new home construction market.
BAGI says 653 permits were issued last month in the nine-county region, compared with 599 permits during the same month last year.
The organization says 3,150 permits have been issued year-to-date, which is a 5 percent increase over the same period in 2016.
"Although the Central Indiana new home construction market remains steady, there is unrealized opportunity for housing products on smaller lots that provide the type of lifestyle many homebuyers seek," said Craig Jensen, president of BAGI. "As an industry, we continue to work to address the demand and the regulatory barriers that limit us so that we can continue to meet the needs of these ever-changing demographics."
Six of the nine counties saw increases in building permits. Shelby County led the way with a 114 percent increase over the same month in 2016. Madison County saw the biggest drop with a 47 percent decrease from the previous year.
