A state Republican Party caucus has selected the successor to Brandt Hershman in the 7th Indiana Senate District. Brian Buchanan, who serves as an at-large member of the Boone County Council and works for his family business, Fort Wayne Buchanan Hauling and Rigging Inc., will finish out the remainder of Hershman’s term.
The district includes all of White County and parts of Jasper, Carroll, Tippecanoe, Clinton and Boone counties. Hershman resigned January 2 for a private sector opportunity in Washington D.C. He served 18 years in the General Assembly.
Buchanan received 42 votes on the final ballot out of 83 that were cast. He beat five other candidates vying for the seat: Arthur Anderson, Edward Cripe, Stephen Jordan, Shelli Maxwell and Arvid Olson.
Indiana GOP Chairman Kyle Hupfer, who presided over Thursday’s caucus in Monticello, said: "on behalf of the Indiana Republican Party, congratulations to Indiana’s newest state senator, Brian Buchanan. Former State Senator Brandt Hershman served this district honorably over his distinguished career in the Indiana Senate — helping Indiana rise to become the fiscal envy of the nation. I’m confident that State Senator-elect Buchanan will work with that same passion to serve Hoosiers throughout the district, working alongside his Republican colleagues to deliver great government service for all."
