Board of Ed Votes on Turnaround Schools

The Dual Language Immersion Pilot Program is in its second year.

The Indiana State Board of Education has voted on the future plans for seven turnaround academies in Indianapolis and Gary. Among the board’s decisions, one of the schools will be released from turnaround status.

The board voted unanimously to remove the turnaround status for Broad Ripple Magnet High School in Indianapolis. The school had received four consecutive "B" grades in the state’s accountability system, which led to the board’s decision.

Roosevelt College and Career Academy in Gary will continue to be operated by EdisonLearning for another year. The board voted unanimously to extend EdisonLearning’s contract after it and Gary Community School Corp. announced their plan to partner in future years to operate the school. The board says the contract extension allows both parties to finalize their plans and seek final approval from the board next year.

"Roosevelt is a historic institution with a long tradition of producing outstanding students and distinguished alumni," said Eddie Melton, state board member representing the 1st congressional district. "This contract extension allows EdisonLearning and Gary schools to partner with community stakeholders to provide the best possible outcome for Roosevelt students."

Charter Schools USA also received contract extensions to operate Thomas Carr Howe Community High School, Emmerich Manual High School and Emma Donnan Middle School. The board also voted unanimously to reaffirm its decision to return day-to-day operations of George Washington Community High School and Arlington High School to Indianapolis Public Schools.
