The latest data from the Indiana Gaming Commission show bettors wagered $476 million last month through Indiana’s online and retail sportsbooks. Gaming analysts from PlayIndiana.com say the NCAA Tournament helped Indiana’s sportsbooks bounce back from February’s slowdown that came in at $410 million.
The wagers generated $32.8 million in gross revenue for sportsbook operators and about $3 million for state coffers.
Because of the NCAA Tournament, March is easily the busiest non-football month on the calendar for sportsbooks, according to analysts.
“Sportsbooks will now enter the slow season, as the NBA playoffs, baseball, and major golf tournaments become the main attractions. As wagering begins its seasonal dip, though, the industry can take heart in knowing that the last six months have represented a giant leap forward,” said Eric Ramsey, an analyst for the PlayUSA.com Network, which includes PlayIndiana.com.”
Year-over-year, handle was up 50% from the same period last year.
PlayIndiana.com says betting interest in the tournament even tops the Super Bowl since there are so many games taking place over the course of a few weeks.
