A European beverage manufacturer has announced plans to close its facility in Evansville. In a notice to the state, Refresco said the move will result in the layoffs of 45 workers.
Refresco makes and packages a variety of beverages for global, national and emerging brands, as well as retailers around the world. The company is headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and its North American operations are headquartered in Tampa, Florida.
A spokesperson told Inside INdiana Business the decision to close the Evansville manufacturing plant, located at 1100 Independence Avenue, was a difficult one made after careful consideration.
“This decision was not taken lightly, and it comes after an extensive review of various factors regarding our manufacturing operations,” the spokesperson said. “As a result of the review, we decided to absorb the volume from Evansville and allocate it to other plants in our network so we can operate more efficiently.”
The company plans to begin laying off workers on March 28, with the full reduction slated to be complete by April 26. The layoffs are expected to be permanent.
“The company will be providing comprehensive support and resources to the employees at Evansville that includes career counseling, job fairs that will provide assistance with job placement and networking, severance packages, and access to training and personalized career training,” the spokesperson said.
The affected workers are not represented by a union and do not have bumping rights.
Refresco employs more than 13,500 people globally. The company also has operations in the Dearbon County city of Greendale and employs about 130 people.
