The automaker is planning to pump $37 million into its Bedford facility, amid restructuring plans that include some 2,000 jobs cuts at Michigan and Ohio assembly plants. Late last year, GM detailed a $127 million investment into the Bedford Casting Operations.
Though no Lawrence County jobs will be added, the company says the investment will help retain 45 workers in the facility that currently employs 719. The most recent boost brings the total investment from GM into Bedford to more than $450 million since 2010. GM also announced investments in Ohio and Michigan plants Wednesday totaling close to $900 million.
The manufacturer says it plans to suspend third shift production at the Lansing Grand River operation in Michigan and Lordstown assembly plant in Ohio early next year as part of a strategy to "align production output with demand." GM says customers are continuing to trend toward crossover and truck purchases.
