Beacon Health makes leadership appointments ahead of acquisition

South Bend-based Beacon Health System has announced several leadership appointments related to its previously announced acquisition of Ascension Southwest Michigan.
Carl Risk, who has served as president of Elkhart General Hospital since 2016, will become president of Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Risk will also serve as integration executive for the Ascension Southwest Michigan facilities, which includes Borgess Hospital, Borgess Allegan Hospital, Borgess-Lee Hospital, and Borgess-Pipp Hospital, along with 35 outpatient clinics and an ambulatory surgery center.
“During his tenure at Elkhart General Hospital, Carl has built a strong leadership team and fostered an exceptional team atmosphere and workplace culture that have resulted in a consistent achievement of health system strategic goals,” Beacon CEO Kreg Gruber said in a news release. “Carl will initially focus on organizational stability before expanding programs and services in the years ahead.”
Beacon has begun a search to find Risk’s successor at Elkhart General Hospital. Michael Johnson, who currently serves as vice president of operations at the hospital, will become interim president.
Additionally, Kari Snyder, the executive director of nursing at Elkhart General, will become vice president of nursing at Borgess Hospital.
Beacon first announced an agreement to acquire the Michigan health system in April. The deal is expected to close this summer, pending regulatory approvals in Indiana and Michigan.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
