South Bend-based Beacon Health System is planning a new hospital in Granger and, pending final approvals, will also bring Community Hospital of Bremen under its umbrella. The nearly $26 million Beacon Granger Hospital is slated to break ground in the summer and be complete in about a year. The one-story, nearly 33,000 square-foot facility will be located across from Beacon Health & Fitness Mishawaka and include 11 beds, a full emergency department and eight inpatient beds.

New Beacon Chief Executive Officer Kreg Gruber says "patients want the very best medical care close to home. As we prepare for the future of health care, we want to be easily accessible in our physical locations, as well as virtually, so patients can connect with clinical experts and providers when and where they require medical care." Gruber, formerly chief operating officer, succeeded Phil Newbold, who stepped down in November after 30 years leading the system.

The 24-bed Community Hospital of Bremen could join Beacon Health in the coming weeks. It is considered a Critical Access Hospital and includes emergency, diagnostic, surgical, sleep and therapy capabilities. The current relationship between Beacon and Community includes transferring patients needing acute care to Beacon Memorial Hospital in South Bend. "This really was a natural fit for us, and absolutely the best option for patients," said Community Hospital Chief Executive Officer David Bailey. "As part of Beacon Health System, our community will have even greater access to convenient, high-quality health care."
