In a letter to Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer, Banks a ship bearing the Allen County city’s name would "convey the American ideals of freedom and patriotism to honor those serving in the U.S. military."
Banks specifically requested having a Littoral Combat Ship named after the city. The LCS is the Navy’s newest class of warship, according to the Navy website.
It would not be the first time a ship would be called the USS Fort Wayne. The previous iteration was a freighter commissioned by the Navy in 1918 and decommissioned one year later.
