Box office estimates show “The Fault in Our Stars” brought in $48.2 million, surpassing expectations and making it the number one movie in the U.S. It cost $12 million to produce. The movie is based on the book of the same name by Indianapolis author John Green.
It easily surpassed the weekend's other big box office debut, which had actor Tom Cruise in a leading role and a $175 million price tag.
The movie premiered last week in New York City, but the author decided to make sure he watched it in his hometown.
Green took to his Facebook page over the weekend to tell fans he viewed the movie at Studio Movie Grill in Indianapolis, adding it was “so cool to watch it with people who didn't know I was there.”
