Indianapolis-based Anthem Inc (NYSE: ANTM) has named Dr. Shantanu Agrawal chief health officer, effective January 25. Agrawal most recently served as president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit National Quality Forum and is the former deputy administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Agrawal will oversee the company’s enterprise health strategy, medical policy and clinical quality and will report directly to Anthem President and Chief Executive Officer Gail Boudreaux.

“Dr. Agrawal’s extensive experience in both the public and private sectors will further accelerate Anthem’s efforts around ‘whole person care’ in order to improve outcomes and reduce costs for all those we serve,” said Boudreaux. “He is a transformative thought leader, and I am excited to welcome him to Anthem.”
