Big U.S. 31 Project Complete

A new $10.8 million interchange project along U.S. 31 will be fully open by the end of the day Tuesday in Tipton County. The work removes another traffic light on the busy corridor and is designed to better regulate car and truck traffic moving between 31 and State Road 28. The intersection is the location of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles U.S. LLC Transmission plant in Tipton.
The project includes ramps that are regulated by roundabouts and a new S.R. 28 bridge over 31, freeing-up two lanes in each direction of 31. Construction began in July.
Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson says "combined with the previously completed U.S. 31 Major Moves projects in Hamilton County, Kokomo and South Bend, more than 33 traffic signals have been removed from U.S. 31 north of Indianapolis. This project exemplifies INDOT’s mission to increase safety, improve mobility and support economic growth in Indiana."
Goshen-based Rieth-Riley Construction is the contractor on the project. INDOT says the roundabouts give special consideration to agricultural equipment and increased truck traffic around the FCA plant.
Statewide, there are now more than 250 roundabouts that have been built by INDOT and local municipalities. More than 12 additional roundabouts are in INDOT’s pipeline.
