Anderson Mayor Seeks Final Funding For Bus Terminal

Anderson Mayor Tom Broderick is asking the city’s redevelopment commission for funding assistance for a new bus terminal building. Our partners at The Herald Bulletin report the commission is considering providing $1.8 million in Tax Increment Financing funding for the $8.3 million facility.

The commission is expected to vote on the funding at its meeting in November. The city says, if the funding is lined up, work on the facility could begin in December and be complete by mid-February, according to the publication.

Mayor Tom Broderick says the project already has commitments of $6.3 million in federal funds and $750,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding. The three-story, 16,000-square-foot building will include the City of Anderson Transit System terminal on the north side of the first floor, with the remaining first floor space, as well as the second and third floors, available for leasing to developers.

"CATS is one of the premier bus systems for a community the size of Anderson," Broderick said. "We need to have public transit available for residents. The bus terminal has been discussed for many years. There have been disagreements on the location and the design. This is an investment in downtown."

The new terminal would be located at the intersection of 13th and Jackson Streets in the city’s downtown.
