Highland-based Prompt Ambulance Service has detailed plans to lay off more 140 employees in Lake County. In a notice to the state, the company says the layoffs will begin in late October and be complete by December 31.
The company announced earlier this summer it was shutting down its Lake County operations by the first quarter of 2018, according to our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana. Prompt provided ambulance service for East Chicago, Dyer, Griffith, Highland and Munster.
The publication reports co-owners Gary and Shar Miller plan to retire.
Earlier this year, Prompt ended its service in Merrillville and Lake Station. The Merrillville service was taken over by Highland-based Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Services while Illinois-based Kurtz Ambulance now provides service in Lake Station. Some of the employees at those locations were able to continue employment with the new operators, Gary Miller told The Times.
The town of Munster has already signed a new agreement with Superior. The town of Griffith has issued a Request for Proposals to find a new provider, according to the publication.
