(Nasdaq: ALGT) air base at Indianapolis International Airport is now operational. The facility is home to two Airbus aircraft and a locally-based crew of 80. The low-cost carrier expects to locate a third plane to the Indy base sometime this year.
IND Executive Director Mario Rodriguez told Inside INdiana Business in January the base was the catalyst for two new nonstop flights — Charleston, South Carolina and Sarasota, Florida. The carrier has had a presence at the Indy Airport for three years.
Rodriguez says "the value of our airport hinges on travelers being able to get ‘there’ from here, and Allegiant’s business model has been instrumental in connecting our leisure travelers with a number of unserved and underserved markets – and in a very short period of time, too. It is that kind of commitment and investment that has enabled the Indy airport to break an all-time record with access to 51 nonstop destinations and puts us among the top 10 most-connected airports in the United States."
Allegiant currently has 13 permanent bases Chief Operating Officer Scott Sheldon says "by continuing to grow our operations and contribute even more to the community and economy, we look to become a true hometown airline for Indianapolis flyers." In addition to Indianapolis and its 14 flight destinations, its presence in Indiana extends to South Bend International Airport, Fort Wayne International Airport and Evansville Regional Airport.
