Affordable Housing Project Set to Begin

Subscribe NowOfficials in Bloomington will Monday break ground on the $1.4 million first phase of an affordable housing development. The Switchyard Apartments will provide a total of 16 affordable one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments near the new Switchyard Park in the Monroe County city.
The first phase of the project will feature a three-story building with eight apartments targeting low-income households. Three of the units will be reserved for clients of local nonprofit LifeDesigns, which serves people with disabilities. The second phase will be a two-story building, though a time frame for construction to begin was not provided.
"Switchyard Apartments will create an opportunity for low-income households in Bloomington to live in a vibrant community setting," said Deborah Myerson, executive director of the nonprofit South Central Indiana Housing Opportunities, which is developing the project. "This project supports Bloomington’s need for affordable housing by creating eight new affordable housing units to low-income households who earn $26,075 – $50,050 per year."
The nonprofit says lower incomes will be eligible for two of the apartments under project-based vouchers expected to be awarded by the Bloomington Housing Authority.
The residents of Switchyard Apartments will be selected by a lottery process in addition to credit and income eligibility. Developers expect the housing to be substantially completed by December.
