Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power said this week it plans to end its hybrid work model and order some employees to return to the office five days a week.
A spokesperson for the utility company told Inside INdiana Business that about 300 Indiana employees will be affected by the move.
In an email to IIB, the spokesperson said the new in-office work schedule will begin on June 1. Some employees who were hired specifically for remote roles and others who don’t live near an AEP facility will be exempt, according to the company.
“Over the next five years, AEP plans to invest $54 billion to enhance service for our customers and meet growing energy demand, and this change positions us to work together efficiently to transform our energy system for the future to benefit our customers and stakeholders,” the spokesperson said. “We believe that face-to-face, in-person interactions and working together have real benefits as we deliver solutions to power the nation’s growth.”
AEP is the parent of Fort Wayne-based Indiana Michigan Power, which employs 950 people in Indiana and more than 2,000 across Indiana and Michigan.
Across its entire footprint, AEP said the return to office order will affect about 5,000 employees.
