Big Lots announced Friday that it plans to close an additional 56 stores, including three in Indiana, as it continues to work through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.

The latest closures bring the total number of stores set to shut their doors for good to more than 500.

Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early September as the Columbus, Ohio-based company planned to sell its assets and ongoing business operations to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management.

In an Oct. 11 filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the company identified the latest 56 retail locations set for closure. The Indiana stores on that list are:

  • Franklin: 1538 North Morton Street
  • New Haven: 918 West Lincoln Highway
  • New Albany: 440 New Albany Plaza

Prior to filing for bankruptcy, Big Lots detailed plans to close 300 stores nationwide, including locations in Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Kokomo and Warsaw.

Two more locations in Indianapolis and Noblesville were added to the list in late September, followed by locations in South Bend and Muncie earlier this month.

The retailer did not provide any specific timelines for the closures to take place, only noting that sales at the affected stores can begin pending any objections filed with the court.
