Our partners at WPTA-TV report the 122nd Fighter Wing stopped its scheduled drills over the weekend because of a lack of appropriations from the government.
The base says a portion of the guardsmen with non-exempt duties were sent home at 12:00 p.m. Saturday. Non-exempt federal technicians were placed on furlough Monday afternoon.
"My biggest concern is for the safety and security of our Airmen and their families," said Col. Patrick Renwick, Commander of the 122nd Fighter Wing. "This shutdown will have a significant impact on each and every one of them. Exempted personnel will continue our constant vigilance to ensure that essential operations endure through this period. Our duty is to guarantee readiness for national security requirements and we are and will continue to be equipped and able to support those. We will work closely with local organizations to assist those Airmen and their families in need."
WPTA reports exempt federal technicians and active duty Airmen will continue to operate at the base. An agreement reached Monday funds the government for about three weeks while lawmakers work on a longer-term compromise.
