The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission says the deadline for 10-digit dialing in central Indiana has been extended by one month. Residents in the 317 area code will now be required to dial 10 digits for local calls beginning October 15.
The commission says the extension was made to allow the Electronic Security Association of Indiana extra time to prepare for the switch. The organization told the commission last month that some alarm companies may be behind in the preparations for mandatory 10-digit dialing.
The transition period for the switch to 10-digit dialing, which was originally scheduled to last six months, began in March. The new 463 area code, which will overlay the entire 317 region, is being added in November following projections that all 317 phone numbers will run out by the end of the year.
The commission says the change will not require consumers to change their existing numbers and universal three-digit numbers, including 911, 211, 411, 711, or 811, will not require additional numbers.
