Purdue Global says micro-credentials can range from not-for-credit workshops that take a few hours to complete to certificate-length curriculum that includes full college-credit courses. Provost Jon Harbor says micro-credentials are becoming increasingly important.
“By creating micro-credentials that are valuable on their own and that can also be stacked toward degree completion, we’re finding new ways to give students an opportunity to study in emerging fields as well as a chance to gain recognition for milestone achievements throughout their academic journey,” said Harbor. “We’ve created a dynamic system of micro-credentials that will meet students where they are and help get them where they want to be.”
The university currently offers more than 30 micro-credential options, broken down in to several categories, including those that provide students with introductory skills relevant to an industry-specific field and those that allow a student to gain skills and experience in a specific area in an effort to customize their degree program.
