Our partners at WEHT-TV report the driver of a semi carrying an oversized load attempted to drive under the Pigeon Creek Bridge on Highway 41 last month, but hit steel beams supporting the bridge.
INDOT has since been assessing the damage and says the 80-year old bridge may be beyond repair. Crews say the semi caused beams to completely break apart, while others are partially broken.
A crossover has been put in place near the bridge for traffic to navigate the area. INDOT is also attempting to meet with a consultant to determine next steps.
“There are no options off the table at this point,” INDOT spokesperson Jason Tiller told the station. “Do we repair this bridge? Is damage significant enough that we can repair it versus replace it or do we need to replace it? So there are a lot of things on the table.”
