At a news conference Monday, an emotional Terry Curry said he gave his resignation to Governor Eric Holcomb as he continues his battle with prostate cancer. Curry called his nearly 10-year tenure as prosecutor the "privilege of my professional life."
Curry was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. He said he continues to manage the disease, however his treatment has changed in the last month.
"I am still upbeat about my treatment and my health going forward, but kind of where I am with that treatment and, for a number of considerations, it’s made it necessary that I scale back my professional commitments and focus on my health and family."
Curry’s resignation is effective immediately. However, Curry adds he will remain at the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office as a deputy prosecutor assisting with grand jury investigations and white collar crime cases.
As a result of Curry’s resignation, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Ryan Mears will serve as prosecutor on an interim basis for the next 30 days. A caucus will be held during that time to find a permanent successor to fill the remainder of Curry’s term, which runs through the end of 2022.
Mayor Joe Hogsett released a statement following Curry’s announcement:
Over the last forty years, Terry Curry has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant and a fierce advocate for our city. Since being elected Marion County Prosecutor, he has worked to balance the responsibilities of his office with the needs of the community and I am grateful for his efforts.
I’ve always known Terry to be a strong competitor – whether on the court or in the courtroom — and I believe this fight will be no different. My thoughts are with Terry, Anne, and the entire Curry family during this difficult time.
Marion County Democratic Party Chair Kate Sweeney Bell also released a statement:
Terry Curry has dedicated his life to serving others — whether through his service in the U.S. Army, his career as a journalist exposing discriminatory lending practices, or fighting for Marion County residents first as Deputy Prosecutor and then Prosecutor, Terry Curry has continued to seek justice. For nearly a decade, he led an office of integrity, professionalism, and fairness. He left an indelible mark on our community, and we thank him for his years of committed service to Marion County.
