Mayor Joe Hogsett and the Department of Public Works announced funding for the plan includes nearly $450,000 collected from electronic scooter license fees.
The Shared Mobility Operator ordinance requires licensed electronic scooter companies to contribute $1 a day per scooter deployed in the city to a multimodal infrastructure fund.
“This expansion allows more residents who want or need to travel by bike to do so,” Mayor Joseph Hogsett said, “which means a healthier lifestyle, less pollution, and fewer cars on overstressed roads. Expanding bike connectivity is a win for us all.”
The expansion plan focuses on the near northside and the near southeast. Two open house meetings will be held next month to offer details of the plan and to collect input. Hogsett also announced funding will be allocated to Bike Indianapolis, Freewheelin’ Community Bikes and Biker Boyz & Girlz Shop to provide education and bikes to kids and young adults.
