Smith has not released a date for his retirement, but says he will help commission members with a search for his successor and to transition the position when a replacement is named.
The Indiana Horse Racing Commission will accept applications for the role through May 24. The commission says the executive director must have experience in the horse industry, a high level of management skills and previous experience with pari-mutuel horse betting administration.
“Deciding to retire has not been an easy decision to make, especially when working in an industry which I have grown so passionate about. However, I’m looking forward to spending time with family and focusing on my existing business ventures,” said Smith in a news release.
