Our partners at WFYI report the ruling removes an exemption for the cities from a 2014 state law that capped rental registration and inspection fees.
When the 2014 law was passed, it included exemptions for Bloomington, West Lafayette and Hammond. However, the exemption for Hammond was removed a year later, which led to Hammond suing, saying the exemptions were unconstitutional. The city also also asked the rental fee caps to be scrapped as well.
The Supreme Court agreed that the exemptions were not necessary, though the rental fee caps were not thrown out. As a result, the caps are now in place for every Indiana cities.
