Indiana University President Michael McRobbie has been elected by the Association of American Universities as vice chair of the organization’s board of directors. His term is for one year. McRobbie will serve on the board alongside Vanderbilt University Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos, who was named chair. McRobbie will assume the chair position in fall 2019 at the conclusion of the current term.

Founded in 1900, the AAU comprises the 60 leading American research universities plus the two top Canadian research universities. IU has been a member since 1909. The AAU’s members collectively help shape national policy for higher education, science and innovation; promote best practices in undergraduate and graduate education; strengthen the contributions of research universities to society; and advance the federal government’s goals for creating new jobs, spurring business innovation and improving public health.

In his new post, McRobbie will help guide the association’s work, particularly on federal policy issues affecting research universities. He will also represent AAU in discussions with U.S. lawmakers, help develop national policy positions and play an influential role in determining the association’s agenda during the coming year. Previous IU presidents who served as chair of the AAU were John Ryan (1981-82) and Myles Brand (1999-2000).

McRobbie became the 18th president of IU in July 2007. He joined IU in 1997 as the university’s first vice president for information technology and chief information officer. He was appointed vice president for research in 2003. In 2006, he was named interim provost and vice president for academic affairs for IU’s Bloomington campus.
